Dr Anandakumar Vellasamy is an orthopaedic surgeon practising in Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.

He has a subspecialty interest in complex foot and ankle conditions, including sports injuries and lower limb trauma.

Dr Anandakumar offers minimally invasive surgical options for addressing complex foot and ankle disorders, traumatic injuries of the lower limb and various sports injuries such as arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery for cartilage defects and impingement, deformity correction, total ankle replacement for managing arthritis, and more.

He is experienced in the use of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques to treat calcaneal fractures and correcting deformities including flat feet and bunions. He is also well versed in arthroscopic ankle surgery to address sports ligament injuries and the all-inside (knotless) technique for the Brostrum Gould Reconstruction surgery for ankle instability.

Dr Anandakumar graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2003 and was awarded the Best Houseman Award during his medical posting as a Houseman. He subsequently chose a surgical path and pursued his postgraduate training in orthopaedic surgery in Singapore and obtained his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He was award the N. Balachandran Memorial Lectureship award in the final year of his orthopaedic residency.

He was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan Award in 2016, which enabled him to pursue his fellowship training in the Kantonsspital Baselland and Inselspital Bern University Hospital, Switzerland. He also further honed his skills at the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Etzelclinic in Zurich.

Prior to private practice, Dr Anandakumar was a consultant in the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and Sengkang General Hospital.

He is active in teaching medical students at NUS’ Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School, as well as orthopaedic surgery residents and family medicine trainees. He was part of the master of medicine in orthopaedic surgery committee that is involved in orchestrating the training of junior orthopaedic surgery residents.

Dr Anandakumar has presented at numerous orthopaedic surgery meetings both local and international, including meetings held by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, and the ASEAN Orthopaedic Association.

In a collaboration with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Dr Anandakumar was awarded the SingHealth Academic Medicine Research Grant in April 2019 for a project he was the primary investigator in. He has been involved in projects studying hindfoot biomechanical problems and developing solutions to manage and treat such conditions.
